Central to our activities is the series of professional Lectures, which are held monthly each year (except August and January), on a wide range of arts subjects. Lecturers are well versed in their subjects, often having a research or publishing background in the field, and having the presentational skill to bring their subjects to life. At the national level The Arts Society carefully selects prospective lecturers and compiles a 'Directory' from which individual societies can draw with confidence. There is also a one day event each year when new lecturers make brief presentations before representatives of local Societies, with a view to selecting subjects and lecturers for their next season.
When we are operating normally, a lecture evening is also a social occasion. Drinks are available before the meeting and members are often in no hurry to leave after the formal meeting.
We also have Study Days on which subjects are explored in greater depth. Consisting of two morning sessions and an afternoon session, separated by a lunch break, these are convivial occasions and the social aspect is much enjoyed by members. Coffee and tea is served on arrival and there is a two-course hot lunch.
Both Lectures and Study Days are well illustrated with projected images, and there are opportunties for questions and discussion.
We also organise Visits and Tours. Itineries are carefully planned and advance arrangements made on behalf of members. These can be very relaxing ways to enjoy new experiences of art, architectures, theatre, and so on. and spending time with others with similar interests.
There are also opportunities for members to get involved practically through Volunteering. Members bring their skills and experience, and more particularly their commitment and enthusiasm to projects that help preserve and celebrate our artistic heritage. See the section on Volunteering.
