Meadows School Collage Collaboration July 2026
Our vice chair Elaine Johnson made contact with the assistant headteacher Camilla Doonan whilst researching the history of Meadows School for Southborough Society. Having been on a tour of the school and seen the wonderful art facilities and the potential for art as a mediative and nurturing medium, she proposed that the school was worthy of The Arts Society Sevenoaks support.
Our Young Arts co-ordinator Anne Deane took over and led a very valuable project with Claire Clements, a community artist, working with students of a range of ages.
The school is run by the Barnardo’s charity, and the students have high level educational and emotional needs, so this sort of work is highly relevant.
The aim of the project was to produce a textile wall hanging entitled: A celebration of Southborough Common
The students began their creative journey by taking photos of scenery and nature found on the Common.
Artworks were then created using a variety of art processes based on the photos taken.
The final sessions saw the children experiment with appliqué, creating beautiful fabric flowers and leaves.
Children developed their cutting and sewing skills to create simple motifs and to practice skills of co-operation.
The final result is a spectacular wall hanging that celebrates nature in a local environment as well as a sense of place.
Claire hopes to display it in Southborough Library.
Youth Club and Sevenoaks Food Bank
Young Arts is now called Arts Volunteering to include all community arts projects. One society in Kent is supporting a project for people with Dementia for example.
Here in Sevenoaks, we have supported two projects this autumn: buying artefacts for a medieval and Tudor loan box for the museum and giving funds to the Youth club at the Stag Theatre for art workshops later this month. The museum loan boxes are put together by the curator with teaching notes and then can be borrowed by local primary schools. The boxes there so far have reached over 500 children. Future plans include art packs for children whose families use the Sevenoaks food bank and a possible project in a special school in Southborough. The former will be funded by a Community grant from the National association. Projects are generally funded through a grant the society receives and also through members contributions from all our activities.
Otford Primary School
The Arts Society Sevenoaks were very pleased to sponsor two events at Otford Primary School in the summer of 2025.
1. Magic Lantern interactive artworks sessions. There were four sessions which were screen showings chosen by the school and were interactive with children fully participating.
2. Emma Johnson’s Music Foundation. This event sponsored Instrument Stories presentations and introduced children to the musical instruments.
The school was extremely grateful, and the experience was wonderful for the children.
Arts Volunteering
Arts Volunteering - also known as Young Arts - funds a variety of exciting projects to promote children’s interest and experience. Strong relationships with the Kaleidoscope Art Gallery and Heads of Departments in schools and Youth Centres have allowed primary school children at Otford and Seal and students at Trinity School the opportunity to learn new art skills. Three of these projects have been displayed at the Kaleidoscope Art Gallery and Trinity School presented a jazz concert resulting from the Society’s grant for specialist musical teaching.
Past projects have included bursaries to music students, a visit to Dulwich picture gallery, artist led workshops in primary schools and the presentation of a workshop by Magic Lantern, a visual learning charity.
We are always seeking ways to interest and involve children in the arts and our recent activity has seen donations of art materials and a project at Crockham Hill Primary School that involved everyone - children and teachers. At the school drawing, sewing skills and consideration of colour and image were utilised to make small banners that explored the theme of “celebrating my uniqueness, celebrating our differences”.
